Omaha Hi Lo Poker (8s or better)
- Straight
When the flop shows neither a pair nor any two cards
in the same suit, there is about a 50% chance that the
hand will be won by a straight if all hands are held
to the showdown. Since many holdings with pairs and
suited couples will be folded when the flop proves to
be of no help, the chances of a straight ending up as
the winner increases to about 65%.
Of course merely having a straight is not enough, since
there is frequently more than one straight present.
Indeed, even making the nut straight on the flop may
not be enough.
Suppose the flop is 5 of hearts, 4 of hearts and 3
of spades and you hold ace of spades, 7 of spades, 6
of diamonds and 3 of diamonds. Although you have the
nut straight, your hand is likely to be beaten if any
heart, or ant 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7appears in either of the
two remaining widow cards. Therefore, twenty of the
unseen cards can counterfeit your present nut straight,
and the odds that this will occur are 2-1.
