Omaha Hi Lo Poker (8s or better)
- Play on the turn
After the fourth widow card has been revealed, analytically
speaking, Omaha is simple. It still, however, requires
discipline and the ability to be brutally honest about
the nature of your hand, the techniques of which have
all been previously discussed.
The biggest difference in betting on Pot limit and
in limit Omaha occurs on the turn. In limit Omaha, it
is rare that a player can bet enough at this stage to
make his opponents back down. Thus the turn bet is not
likely to be raised. And when it isn’t, you can
usually afford to draw for a lock hand.
By contrast, in pot limit Omaha the biggest bets are
likely to be made on the turn by the apparently leading
hand, either as a bluff, or to discourage drawing hands
by worsening the pot odds.
It is thus likely to be expensive to pursue a draw
for even the lock full house or a flush, and many good
players who have stayed after the flop on drawing prospects
now give up their hands rather than meet a maximum bet
on the turn. When facing such abet, it is essential
to try to decipher the motive behind it. Here experience
and skill play a large role.
